My name is Don, and I'm an idiot.
I'm putting out a small arts-business newspaper using 9.2 on my Mac. I've become moderately successful, which means the papers get bigger. Also, I've attracted larger and more elaborate ads.
I want to compress the entire paper before uploading it to my web site. I also want to compress individual pdf ads before inserting them into the newspaper.
Unfortunately, many of my customers know less than I do. One guy sent me an ad that was 8 megs. A graphics designer had put the piece together last year and then disappeared. Neither my customer nor I was able to shrink it.
I need something that will compress the individual graphics and the final newspaper.
Here is what I've been doing for the newspaper as a whole, before I attempt to upload it to my web page:
1) I save the entire thing as a pdf.
2) I convert the pdf into eps.
3) I use Distiller.
4) I post the much-reduced pdf onto my web site.
Thats the plan, anyway. I have the same problem as M. Haldeman below. I embed by fonts but the EPS program still spits them out. Seems as if EPS acknowledges only about eight fonts. If you even think thoughts about Times or (heaven forebid) Palentino, EPS staggers to a stop. In the past, I have spent hours going through the newspaper, converting every single font to something EPS can understand.
I need a program that will compact every pdf -- whether it's the entire newspaper or an individual ad.
I tried downloading Enhancer, but I discovered I needed at least a 10.0 system for that.
Please, please, please tell me about a program that will compress any pdf, but one that has more universal tastes in fonts than Distiller.
