I have also found that if you print to a post script printer driver instead of to PDFmaker - then use Distiller to convert the resulting prn to pdf - you get much smaller file sizes - like 3-4 times smaller.
These are not extra programs you have to purchase, they come with the full version of Acrobat (drivers and distiller).
