In creating a book-size PDF from Word 2004 with Acrobat 7, I got dozens of subsetted copies of each font. Resaving the file in Acrobat took several minutes each time, because Acrobat tried and failed to consolidate the fonts.
Has anyone else had this experience? Can you explain it? I noticed on the Web that some Filemaker 7 users had the same experience.
I haven't had this problem with OS 9 versions of Word, and I didn't have the problem when I tried the same file with Word 2003 and Acrobat 6 in Windows. OS X's PDF creation tools don't embed dozens of copies, though they do embed two copies of each font, each with different encoding.
I think it has to do with Word 2004 switching to Unicode. It looks to me as if Distiller on the Mac was never updated to properly handle Unicode.
