I agree with Stefan, Adobe Acrobat works very well with digital signatures, and by buying a certificate for less than $100 a year, you can have a very good and strong solution for the problem you've described.
You definitely don't have to spend a lot to get a good solution.
I think it's better to buy a certificate than using the free ones, because your problem is not only that people will change your documents, but they can also create a new document that looks similar to yours, and then sign it with another free certificate that will look very very similar to yours. It is not that it is impossible to say who's the original and who's the forged, but for the common people it wouldn't be that clear.
