First, we don't know what program you are using to convert to
XML - NOR what the original PDF looks like internally...so any
comments being made are 100% SPECULATION.

The most common reason for this is the presence of "Faux
Bolding" in the PDF - where instead of using a REAL bold font, the
authoring application wrote each letter TWICE, slightly shifted from
the previous one.
