Topic: Image masks which were not downsampled

I frequently need to prepare PDF files for viewing on the web, most of which were created by someone else, usually in InDesign, sometimes in Quark. When I try to get them as small as possible using pdf optimizer, I usually get the message "...contains image masks which were not downsampled." Any way around this, either something I can do or that the original creator can do? Not even PDF enhancer has solved this problem.
