I'm not sure this is the right forum to ask this question, but here it goes.
A client has asked me to "fix" an old (5-6 years) PDF file that is available for electronic web download. It is 3000 pages long (80 meg), and has several errors that prevent Acrobat 7 and 8 Pro from saving the file, due to "reading error" (#109), several fonts that are embedded can not be opened, dozens of images are partial,or missing, and at least 4 whole pages are missing, that is blank. Many of the paragraphs (into the hundreds of paragraphs) have sentences that go beyond the right margin, but apparently not the page border. Those are just the problems I have come across, that is, there may be others.
There are 80 chapters, and each individual chapter PDF file was upgraded by Acrobat 7, by me, to support byte serving, as the downloads were failing to be completed, but the quality of the page content remains in doubt.
The large PDF was made 5-6 years ago, by a person who can not be found now, using an unknown program. The PDF chapters were made by a different person.
The web users downloading the huge PDF file are complaining it will not open.
I need recommendations.
My thoughts run along these lines:
1) Merge the 80 PDFs into a new huge PDF
2) Find Acrobat 5 and 6, and use each in turn to convert the 1.3 PDF to 1.4, then 1.5, and use Acrobat 7 and 8 to convert it to the level that opens for most Readers.
(What should be that level? 6 or 7?)
3) Hire a firm or individual with great experience to do this.
4) Post to a PDF forum and ask what to do.
But supply some answers to show I am not completely clueless.
