This problem is driving me a little nuts. I'm getting the "there was an error....file is damaged...could not be repaired" message. The quandry is that it's happening a lot and to the same file. Also, this problem happens either for files I create (print to pdf type of action) or with files that are already pdf's that I download.
For example, I download a form from online and save it to my hard drive and it opens fine. Then, maybe I save it to my flash drive instead and it doesn't open. Another example where this is happening is with pdf files that I create myself by scanning and saving it to pdf using IrfanView.
I've got numerous examples of these and so in my research I found that there may be an xref table problem. So, I try viewing the same files (one version that does open and the same file that doesn't) with a hex editor. The bad files start to differ from their good cousin version down towards the bottom. I don't know anything about HEX files so I don't know if this helps but one file starts differing from it's good version at line 000175F8 and another file that this is happening with starts differing from it's good version at line 0001F600.
Here is the software I've' got loaded.
-Adobe Reader 8.1.1
-IrfanView (4.10) with plugin ImPDF(0.4). I use this to save (not print) to pdf pages I've scanned.
-Ghostscript 8.54 (I think IrfanView ImPDf needs this)
-CutePDF for printing to pdf.
Another thought I have is that it tends to happen a lot when I also save the pdf to my flash drive (Lexar Firefly 2gb). I can't imagine how but I'm wondering if the flash is corrupting the file. I've run diskcheck type utilities on the flash drive but there's no errors and defragging it doesn't help either.
Sorry for the long post but I'm trying to address some of the obvious questions that you might have.
TIA
Erick
