I created a word 2007 document with a lot of bitmaps. When i convert it into a pdf with Acrobat 8.1.2, the pdf size is always the same, whatever the settings i am using ('high quality print' or 'Smallest File Size'). If i use PNG pictures instead, i don't have this problem. It seems a bug to me.
