A document I downloaded properly displays English alphabetic characters. When highlighting, some of the text displays in the pop-up and in the comment pane as x's in squares. That same text cannot be found in a search of the document. (Other text shows up properly in pop-ups and comments, and can be found with a search of the document.)

Is there a way, other than printing and scanning, to process the document so all characters are properly displayed in highlight pop-ups and findable in searches?
