My initial reaction is that the spot color was not properly defined in the
first place. Crackerjack lists all the spot colors that it finds in a PDF.
For example, open ColorSteps.pdf which is included with the demo version.
You will note that Crackerjack shows Orange as one of the inks to be
printed.

To successfully include spot color gradients, you must use at least
Illustrator 8.0.1, PostScript 3, PDF 1.3 and Acrobat 4.05 throughout.
