It is far better and more reliable to print to a
PostScript file first and then use Distiller to create
your PDF. PDF Writer is not recommended.
Depending on your application, you can streamline
the process of creating a .ps file and distilling into
PDF. Quark, for instance, has a free PDF Filter that
automates most of the process.
