Several people have done exactly what you describe, Aandi: They let
PDFWriter run, and then they used Adobe Acrobat to post-process the output.
Some of these people were trying to use Ari's PDF Splitter, which is a
plug-in to Adobe Acrobat, to split up the file.
This ran into trouble for two basic reasons. Adobe Acrobat is not licensed
to run on a server, and anything that use Acrobat was too slow for
processing very large files.
So, at Dionis we developed Ari's PDF Splitter Pro, which is a stand-alone
executable that splits the PDF using its own code instead of layering on
top of Acrobat as plug-ins do. Ari's PDF Splitter Pro is licensed for
server use and can be controlled from the command line. It also runs very
quickly, about one hundred times faster than any solution based on Acrobat.
Even better, Ari's PDF Splitter Pro can be set up to look at the text on a
page to control the splitting. If you draw a rectangle around the account
number on a page, it can split the file every time the account number
changes from page to page. You can also define parts of the text on the
page that are used to name the smaller PDF files that are created from the
one big PDF.
This isn't exactly a "hire me" response, but this is software that will do
exactly what the original poster was looking to have done.
