Just an interesting 'real life' example.
One of our clients uses Quark and InDesign 1.52. Their normal workflow is to use Quark to import copydots scans and then PDFs via AGFA Normaliser - fine. This route because importing copydots into InDesign normally takes about 20 minutes on a high spec 1.2GHz PC.
The editorial pages are exported from InDesign (using the PDF-Library). We have a 95% success rate. The 5% that do create PDFs but do not RIP (AGFA PDF RIP PS3 CPSI) are re-saved to postscript and distilled - fine.
So I do agree with the last post, if it is pre-press then use Distiller as your 'guardian angel'.
PDF-Library (InDesign, Illustrator, Freehand, Corel) PDFs work most of the time, but their reliability for intensive pre-press work is not up to that of Distiller.
