PlanetPDF sells an animation tutorial (ebook) and it covers all sorts of
techniques, mostly requiring Acrobat or Reader 4.05. The techniques all use
controlled frame rates, not ad-hoc techniques that give a frame rate
dependent on cpu speed. Of course, frame rates with JavaScript are never
100% precise because of latency issues having to do with parsing and
executing script expressions, and any attempt to get a frame rate of more
than 15 to 20 fps using JavaScript will generally run into trouble; but this
is true for JavaScript in HTML pages as well as in PDF.
The "big secret" to doing PDF animations is proper use of setInterval() and
setTimeOut().
