SUCCESS!!!!

I should have paid closer attention to one of the answers already given, but I missed the significance.

When I chose 'print to file', I selected the PS printer from my list of printers. I missed one of the choices in the printer list, as it was listed above the default one, so didn't immediately show up in the drop down list. And guess what - one of the printers listed was Acrobat PDF Writer. So by choosing that one went I chose 'print to file', I got my PDF!

Seems so logical now, of course.
