A less obvious but extremely effective solution is to convert your PDF files to DjVu files. You can reduce the document size by two to twelve times, depending on the extent of the graphics content of the document.
DjVu has a free viewer plugin like the Acrobat Reader plugin. You can view comparative examples of PDF and DjVu in the case studies section of my website at www.pdfwebsearch.com.
Email me if you would like a sample conversion of PDF to DjVu.
