Sounds like it have something to do with a memory limitation on your =machine.

First, don't scan documents (especially text-only documents) in grayscale =unless you really need to. Grayscale images are are huge when compared to =their bi-tonal conterparts.

Second, don't scan at anything over 300 dpi unless, again, you have some =real need - like you are planning to OCR 5 point text, for example.
