You left out which version of Acrobat you were using.
I know that for the process you describe above I use Acrobat 3. The file
size is constantly smaller than 5 and much much smaller than with 4 or 4.05.
We usually get around 45-55K per page.
I scan in at 300 dpi, clean up the scan and save using TIFF Group 4
compression, then import them into Acrobat 3.
