You are correct about almost everything. But there IS now a "certified plug-ins only" option with Acrobat 5. In order to run your plug-ins (which worked fine with version 4), you need to select Edit->Preferences->General->Startup->Certified Plug-ins only. Once unchecked, this setup will remain in effect until you turn it on. This means that it is saved somewhere...
