I was having the same problem and found an obscure solution within Word. Open your document. On the Tools menu, click Options and then Compatibility. In the Options box, unclick "Use printer metrics to lay out the document" and voila! Your problem should be resolved. For more info, search Word's Help for "portable documents" and specifically see the "Preserve a document's original layout and page breaks" topic. Hope this helps you. I was having the same problem with a 900 page document and lost half my hair stressing out!
