Topic: IE the cause of error: missing '%PDF

I thought I'd just report a strange error, even though it has been resolved - it makes no sense , perhaps someone can enlighten me.
Our web app dynamically generates PDF files on disk, and then reads them in and streams them to the web server response.
In some IE browser versions with Acrobat 5, we get the error "File does not begin with %PDF-". This is not true - when I request the PDF from a browser without Acrobat installed, and view the received data I can see that '%PDF-' are the first characters in the data.
Moreover, the resolution of this problem has been in all cases to install the latest version of IE. It happened in IE 5.5 (solved after installing to service pack 2) and in IE 6.0 (solved after installing to the latest version). It did not happen in IE 5.0.
I wonder what is going on here. Is there some strange glitch that had to be solved twice by Microsoft? Or is it the act of reinstalling that is solving the problem.
In any case it seems that there is a possibility for IE to interfere with correct Acrobat functioning.
