To an extent, Andi, I agree with you, and I don't want to leave
the impression that its the only solution.
Firstly, why would anyone EVER want to export a Quark or
Pagemaker file to an EPS only to re-import back into Quark?
But if you do, you're opening up an enormous grey area which
can cause problems - if not for you then perhaps for your
service bureau / printer, especially one using CTP.
If you do decide to import an EPS into quark for press work
and have the type of problem discussed, Photoshop IS an
option. Searchability does not come into it. The magazine is
printed and chucked so why do I need searchability? The file
size is reduced / increased (depending on save option) within
Photoshop and you don't need to run at 1000 dpi either. How
many Illustrator eps' have been opened in Photoshop in the
past? How many PDFs' have been opened diretly in
Photoshop? These options are provided for a reason.
As a pre-press manager I often have little choice for badly
constructed, quark or pagemaker exported eps files. I have
run several thru Photoshop (albeit as a LAST resort) with very
little (if any) loss of quality.
I don't advocate it, (but then I'm dead against exporting eps'
anyway), but it can elimlinate a host of potential problems
within the eps.
As a final thought, TIFF IT. Its doing pretty much the same
thing I believe.
