I've found that some products that produce pdfs do a
better job optimizing than others... For example
Adobe Framemaker generated pdf's (in my experience)
seem to preload about 1/3 of the entire pdf before
displaying the first page! My pdf's average 3-5mb in size so folks on dialup lines are not very happy with the response time. Anyone else seen the same? I haven't had a chance to deconstruct a pdf to determine exactly what is being front loaded.
