Topic: changing from C to C++ for MFC

I'm wanting to use the MFC for window manipulation in my plugin. I started out with the plugin Template from the SDK. It is a C file not a CPP file. I change the extension and recompile and the linker chokes on:
"extern HINSTANCE gHINSTANCE;"
because it says that that it is an unresolved external.
gHINSTANCE is used for the bitmap that shows up on the toolbar. Has anyone run into this before?
