Topic: Converting PDF to image (JPEG or GIF)

I'm using PDFLib to create PDFs at my webserver which works great. I would however like to present the result as an image rather than a PDF. For fast proof reading it is much faster viewing an image, compared to the time it takes for Acrobat Reader to fire up and load the PDF.
I have tried GhostScript for converting the PDF to JPEG and it works but not good enough. I have no control over the image size and it only converts the first page. Even worse, since I am developing in Java there is no Java API for GS. I have to invoce it as a separate program, not fast at all!
So what I am looking for is a program library that can read a PDF and convert it to an image format of my choice. Any ideas???
