Topic: handle count increases when printing pdfs

This is my first posting to this listserv. To make a long story short, we have written a batch application which is suppose to create 70,000 reports. We use an excel spreadsheet to create the reports and then use the Adobe Distiller to print the reports as PDF files. The problem is that this process never runs from start to finish, the application either stops with no errors or the Windows NT server crashes. Using the Windows Performance Monitor last week we noticed that as each report is printed using the Distiller 2-3 handles are left open per report. As each report is printed the handle count increases, so we are thinking that the reason the server crashes is may be due to the handle count being exceeded.
If I print PDFs manually I notice the handle count increases and then goes back to 0, but since we never stop creating PDFs within our application the Distiller cannot clear the handle count. After each report is printed the Distiller stays open so again the handles can't be freed.
Has anyone run into this problem?
Is the Distiller designed to handle such a high volume of reports?
Thanks for any help or advice in advance,
