Topic: How to intercept Search Plug-in file open

I'm having a problem trying to use the Search plug-in (in a way it was never intended). We want to store our pdf files in a compressed format (similar to a zip file) and have the search index outside the archive. When the user does a search and finds a file he wants to open, I want to be able to intercept that request, locate the file in the archive, decompress it, then let the viewer load the file.
Using the RFS plug-in sample, I'm able to intercept the file open calls (from the menu and from Search if the file exists). But I don't know how (or if it's possible) to intercept the Search plug-in's check for the file being there in the first place.
Does anyone have any ideas?
