Some of our website users are expereincing a problem when downloading/viewing PDFs. When the first PDF is downloaded, it is correctly displayed via Adobe Reader; however, when subsequent PDFs are downloaded, the first PDF continually shows up in Adobe.
Further research into the problem reveals that the problem is related to how the Adobe Acrobat Reader (version 4.0) is configured with the browser. For example, if Acrobat is configured as a Helper Application to Netscape Navigator 4.7 or Internet Explorer 5.0, the problem where the wrong PDF is displayed does not occur. If Acrobat is configured as a plug-in to Netscape Navigator 4.7 the first
downloaded PDF is properly displayed and the same PDF is redisplayed for all other PDF downloads.
If Acrobat is configured as a plug-in to Internet Explorer 5.0, the problem exists, but is much more intermittant. From our testing (somewhat limited),
it appears that if each PDF is downloaded one time that the correct PDF is displayed. If one PDF is downloaded a second time the problem of displaying
the wrong PDF occurs. It also appears that downloading the same PDF two times in a row will display the correct PDF on the second download.
We have not tested any other browsers (or versions) or another version of Acrobat Reader to determine whether the plug-in problem exists for those combinations.
I have searched the Adobe web site for information related to this problem but did not find any information. I have not searched the Netscape Navigator
or Internet Explorer web sites as the problem would seem to be with using Adobe as a plug-in (problem exists for both browsers).
Does anyone have any ideas on the cause, or solutions to the problem? Also, does anyone have suggestions as to what else should be done?
