Robert,

ActivePDF (http://www.activePDF.com) have a product that can do this in real
time and without the need for Distiller/Acrobat.

There are also licensing issues here, both with Word and also Acrobat. No
part of Acrobat (incl Distiller) can be run from a Web server. Not sure
about Word's licensing on this issue.

As for the generation of PDF files from Word without Acrobat/Distiller, you
might like to look into PDFLib (http://www.pdflib.com) also 5D's PDFCreator
(http://www.fived.com).

There is a FAQ on the developers site which covers _some_ of these
questions: http://partners.adobe.com.
