Well, there isn't much in the Acrobat API to help out, but it does give you
access to the platform dependent datatypes so that you can use the platform
dependent APIs to figure things out. Here is some code I have used on
Windows to determine if a PDF is displayed in a browser. This code has not
been well tested but it should give you a clue as to how to get started.

the_avwindow = AVDocGetAVWindow(doc);
hwnd_win = AVWindowGetPlatformThing (the_avwindow);
hwnd_parent = GetParent(hwnd_win);
while (hwnd_parent ){
hwnd_win = hwnd_parent;
hwnd_parent = GetParent(hwnd_win);
foo = GetWindowText(hwnd_win,buffer,255);

if (strstr( buffer, "Netscape")){
return (1);

if (strstr( buffer, "Internet Explorer")){
AVAlertNote("Internet Explorer");
return (1);
