Three things:

1) When you walk through your code, is there a point when the object
variable is properly set?
2) Remember that MS error messages are notoriously misleading, referring
often to the symptom at best, giving you the joy of going on a wild goose
chase. Be sure that there is not something else going on.
3) As a last resort, you might also use the Shell technique along with
sendkeys to automate the process. This eliminates having to reference the
library.

Subject: Distiller API

From: "Jim"

I'm using VB6 SP5 on an Win 2K machine to develop a script that involves the
distiller library. I have Acrobat 4.0 installed and I've included the
library in my project and followed the API reference for invoking an
instance of distiller. I consistently receive a runtime error "object
variable or with block variable not set" no matter what method I try to use
from the one and only distiller class. There is no with block and I've
checked spelling in declarations, etc. Anyone else have a problem like this?
