That was your first mistake :(. JPEG is a lossy graphics format
designed for images - NOT for line art. I would go back and redo them in
either PNG or TIFF - IF there is a good reason to have line art as a raster
image instead of a vector.

Of course they do!

It sounds like you would be MUCH better served by creating a
vector based image - EPS, EMF, etc.

Second, when converting from Word -> PDF, make sure you use
Acrobat Distiller and NOT something like PDFWriter.
