Converting all those formats to PDF will be a nightmare. Why not limit the users to a few fileformats that are easily converted into PDF such as EPS, PS and TIFF. The utility that I would choose for this task would be the OneVision Asura (, thats the number one app for serverside automatic ripping and conversion to PDF.

PDF as preview only ? Why not use PDF as the fileformat for download ? I know I certainly wouldnt want to download datafiles which might contain viruses and stuff (such as Office Word .DOC format). By using PDF as the distribution format, you can accomplish a lot of things which you otherwise will have problems with.

1. Interoperability - PDF files can be opened on ANY platform with free tools and can be made to look exactly the same on any platform.
2. File size - PDF files weigh less if created right.
3. Security - No evil macro viruses in your files.
4. Digital Rights - PDF is excellent for implementing digital rights management schemes and protecting the information.

Handmade software has made a software called Image Alchemy which can convert most of the filesystems out there to JPEG. If using the OneVision Asura that I mentioned earlier, you can output EPS and convert that to JPEG for example.

Adding a PDF Stamp Comment

OK, so you want to stamp your document. Maybe you need to give reviewers some advice about the document's status or sensitivity. This tip from author Ted Padova demonstrates how to add stamps with the Stamp Tool along with related comments.
