If you are going to bite the bullet and try writing your own
PDF parser, you may as well at least look at some existing ones for
some help and guidance. There are two parsers that might help you
out:

* Etymon PJ () is a Java-based PDF parser with
sources available. It doesn't do content stream parsing, but will at
least get you started on the main objects.

* Text::PDF is the PDF component for Perl and includes a PDF parser
in full source. It also doesn't do content streams, but again, it
might help.

Also, you'll probably discover as you go along that a simple
linked list isn't going to really cover the full breath & depth of
the PDF file format and that you'll also want to look into other data
structures instead of and in combination with your list.

Good luck on this project and feel free to let us know how it's coming along!
