Postscipt is not thought of as a general purpose programming
language like C++, Java, Pascal, Basic, etc. As such, the majority
of programmers skilled in using Postscript spend much of their time
using other programming languages as well. So, asking for the number
of Postscript programmers as compared to other programmers is really
not a valid request.
As a related issue: We have been interviewing and hiring more
programmers over the past several months; and, finding a programmer
with experience coding Postscript is very difficult. Though, I doubt
you will be able to find any quantitative information on the number
of programmers skilled in Postscript.
With regard to books; publishers print what they think they can sell
and not many people write Postscipt code. Though, a quick search of
Amazon.com did find 130 books with Postscript in the title.
