The answer depends on whether you want/need/expect your
signatures to be compatible with Adobe's - AND how much work you wish
to do.

The main thing that you gain from using the DigSig handlers
is that they will deal with providing you the appropriate object data
in a consistent way. If you wish to make your own choices as to what
data to sign (and are therefore incompatible with Acrobat Sigs) OR
you wish to reverse engineer exactly what objects get signed in what
order, then you can do certainly do either/both.
