Archie,

This really comes down to how money you want to spend. Verity and other
companies do provides search facilities for PDF files on a Web Server but
they cost (and sometimes they cost heaps).

Extracting the Document Information from PDF file and making a little index
in a flat text file is probably the simplest - anything in between will cost
or take a PDF Programmer and lotsa time :)
