Im not sure why you need to launch "AcroExch.App". You use this object
for editing your pdf (programmatically launch Adobe, open your document,
edit whatever).

But if you just need to optimize your PDF file thru your code without
launching Acrobat (in the background) then just use this

Set objDestFile = CreateObject("AcroExch.PDDoc")

and you will be still able to play with that PDF like this

retValue = objDestFile.Open("c:\mergeq\" & sSourceFileName)
numPages = objDestFile.GetNumPages()

Regarding your code, Close() all open PDF files before you Exit() Acrobat
and set all objects to Nothing. If you are on NT check task manager and see
whether all Acrobat processes are gone. If there are then it somehow seems
remember that you have your document open.

Subject: why does it open the viewer?

Let me make this more readable--sorry about that...

I am writing a program that opens an existing PDF file, optimizes it, saves
it and closes it. This program is a dll that I call from an ASP page.

Anyway, something peculiar is happening and I don't know why. The first
time this is called, everything works like a charm. The second time
through, however, it opens an Acrobat Reader window and displays an error
message saying it can't open the requested file.

Part of the code looks like this:

Dim Exch As Acrobat.CAcroApp
Dim PDDoc As Acrobat.CAcroPDDoc
Dim AVDoc As Acrobat.CAcroAVDoc

Set Exch = CreateObject("AcroExch.App")
Set AVDoc = CreateObject("AcroExch.AVDoc")
Set PDDoc = CreateObject("AcroExch.PDDoc")

On the second time through, when it executes
"Set Exch = Create...", it opens the Reader window. Why does it do this? I
exit the application and kill all objects at the end of this procedure. Can
anyone help me out?

Adding a PDF Stamp Comment

OK, so you want to stamp your document. Maybe you need to give reviewers some advice about the document's status or sensitivity. This tip from author Ted Padova demonstrates how to add stamps with the Stamp Tool along with related comments.
