Topic: setting the layout to one column, continuous

I wrote a VB application that opens an exisiting PDF, optimizes it, and closes it. I want to add to its functionality by setting the file so that when it's opened, the layout is continuous, instead of single-page.
Can this be done? I'm a little confused. I did research by reading the Acrobat SDK, and I found that this code:
Set Exch = CreateObject("AcroExch.App")
Exch.SetPreference avpPageViewLayoutMode, PDLayoutOneColumn
should set what I want. However, after the code executes, and I open the file in my Reader, it is set to single-page. I think this may be why, but I'm unsure: does this code set an application preference, and once I close the application in the code, I lose the preference? Like I said, I'm a little confused.
Any help is appreciated.
