Topic: Converting Color to Black (not Grayscale)

Greetings.
Our client produces pdf reports for web (in color) and submits them to us for offset print. The part in color gets changed to black on the printed piece (saves money on multi-color printing). We currently receive the file (email attachment), open and edit with Enfocus Pitstop. I have a created a Pitstop action that does this fairly automatically but we'd like to skip it all together.
Can I read the pdf with perl and substitute the color arrays for specific colors? The same 2 colors are used everytime. The client is using MS Word and PDF Writer. He writes them as binary now, but we could probably get him to switch to asci, if this makes a difference.
This may be more of a prepress question, but I think an answer for this particular type of problem may be more available in this forum.
Thanks,
Cliff
