Topic: PDF encryption: streams and strings

What is happening to the streams and strings of a PDF when the document is being encrypted by the Standard algorithm or a custom security handler? Are they encrypted simply by RC4 using some key or does anything else happen to them? What is the result of setting security on a PDF? Can I reproduce this process with a custom application encrypting streams and strings with RC4 and do all other modifications in the structure of the PDF (encrypt object, xref entry, etc)? What modifications do I have make? I would like to modify unencrypted PDF files to be encrypted without using Acrobat, and open these files with an Acrobat plugin.
