Topic: HUGE file size after converting Word doc into PDF

I have a Word 2000 document that I need to convert to PDF for publication over the internet. The original size of the Word document is around 400KB, but when I convert it into PDF it triples or even quadruplicates, depending on the way I do the conversion.
I tried using the PDFMaker toolbar in Word, printing to the Distiller, and printing to the PDFWriter, and none of the cases produced a file size smaller than 1.5MB (PDFMaker).
The document is a User's Guide, so it contains a lot of graphics. I inserted the graphics into Word using the Insert picture command, and they are GIFs no larger than 20KB each, most of them being 10KB.
Is there any suggestion? Should I convert my graphics to another format before inserting them into Word? Or maybe I should just leave the document in Word and provide a link to this document on my website? Any comments on this are greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Fernando.
