The computer system in question is a Pentium II MMX Hewlet-Packard with 96Mb RAM. The OS is Windows 98 (there are at least 30 computers in this office that vary from above to below this configuration.) None of the others have experienced this problem. The version of Reader is 5.0
When attempting to read a PDF file, clicking on the file starts the Adobe call-out process which begins to load the Adobe program. Before the file can be opened an error is displayed which reads:
"plug in failed to initialize" and
"AcroRd32 - this program has performed an illegal operation
Details: caused an invalid page fault in module...."
In an attempt to get around this problem we have done the following:
1) uninstalled Acrobat Reader.
2) removed all registry traces of Reader
3) cleaned the drive (scan disk & Defrag)
4) restarted the computer
5) shut down same
6) reloaded Reader (latest version)
Several times we have downloaded a fresh copy to install. Other times we have used the same copy that was installed on other (working) computers.
The numbered process (above) has been done 5 or 6 times. Can anyone offer any other suggestions.
