Be wary of what sort of rtf you get from converting pdf. The process can be very hit and miss. We have an FAQ on why conversion to formats from pdf is a 'messy' business on our site.
You could try the saveAsRtf option in Acrobat first to see if the results match your expectations. It is generally always better to go back to the original if possible.
Gemini and BCL have done a lot of work on conversion to rtf and have several tools on their sites.
