Topic: EDI to PDF?

Guys, my company currently uses an EDI translator to convert data that's extracted from a legacy system into EDI, XML, etc. I want to take this a step further and convert the data to PDF documents that can be e-mailed or faxed.

How would I go about doing this? The data from the legacy system is typically extracted into an EDI for ASCII file. I was first thinking of using our EDI translator to go from that format to XML, then use an XSL-FO processor and template to go to PDF (i.e. Apache FOP). It seems like there might be a more direct route, though. I suppose that any direct translation with a third-party PDF creator would have to be fairly sophisticated since the source files are EDI and not simple ASCII CSV... a third-party tool would have to parse the EDI tags, and also produce multiple documents from one file... that's the only reason I was thinking of going through an EDI translator first.

Any suggestions on method and third-party tools would be great appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris
