Hi. I am a software engineer but completely new to PDF. This is what my company is looking for...
We have a system that stores PDF documents (Technical Manuals or "Books"). Users of this system download a "Book" from a web site and forward it to a printer for publication. Sometimes the users make modifications before sending it off (which we don't want). The problem is that after they make mods, the book is no longer official or consistent with what is stored in the system. The user cannot save a book back to the system.
We are looking for a way to embed something in the pdf files (books) directly (maybe a script) so that if/when the book gets modified, it inserts a flag into the document. The flag could be something as simple as a background image of the word DRAFT. That way if the user were to send the book to be printed, the printer would know it was not an official version, as would anyone that received the book down the line.
I hope I am explaining this in an understandable way. Basically we want to protect against the problem of having multiple versions of the same Tech Manual floating around without knowing which is the official version.
We don't want a plug-in because we cannot control which software the users have on their machines. We really need something that is internal to the pdf file itself. Also, we do not want to just LOCK the pdf because then we couldn't do editing ourselves.
Any help would be greatly greatly appreciated. Also, if you have any questions that may make things clearer for you if answered, please ask and I will try my best to be as detailed as possible.
Thank you very much.
