I need to learn how to create a PDF file from scratch, on an AS400. Where can I find a PDF reference or tutorial that's not quite as technical and comprehensive as Adobe's PDF Reference?

I want to start out just converting AS400 text to PDF files, and eventually convert ASCII PCL files to a PDF equivalent.

I have software that does this, so I can compare my starting point and the result, but I want to write my own software for this task.

I need a breakdown of the rules for creating a PDF document, that explains the header, document body, trailer, and cross reference in detail, with LOTS of examples.

Any suggestions?
