Topic: Inserting PNG images in PDF file

I am trying to insert a PNG image into a PDF file. For those who are aware of PNG image formats, I am interested in images with colortype = 2 and colortype = 6.
PNG images with colortype=2 has each Pixel described as an RGB triple
PNG images with colortype = 6 has each pixel described as an RGB triple followed by an Alpha sample.
The PDF file with the Image object looks something like this
13 0 obj
/Filter [/ASCII85Decode /FlateDecode] /DecodeParms [ null <<
/Length 14 0 R
The PDF is displayed absolutely fine when the stream contains data from a PNG image with colortype=2 , but fails when image is of Colortype=6.
There seems to be no corruption in the data parsed out from the PNG file. So I suspect it has something to do with one of the Image Properties in the PDF image object , may be the /ColorSpace attribute.
From the PDF spec I cannot figure out, what other properties must be included / changed to acomodate the colortype=6 PNG images. Does Acrobat reader support such Images in the first place ?
greatly appreciate any help or pointers provided.
Many thanks for your patience and help.
