First off, you wouldn't convert a 72dpi image to a 300dpi image -
you could, but you wouldn't want to since it would still be a 72dpi image -
just bigger! What you want to do instead either keep TWO images (one at
72 and at 300) on the server, OR keep JUST a 300dpi image on the server and
then scale to 72 (on the fly) for the preview.
As for the PDF side, there are NUMEROUS approaches to the problem
depending on feature requirements, OS platform, programming ability (or
lack thereof), etc. I'm giving a presentation about this topic at the
upcoming PDF Conference in Bethesda in June in fact.
